Occupy protests move to foreclosed homes (AP)

SEATTLE ? The Occupy Wall Street protests are moving into the neighborhood. Finding it increasingly difficult to camp in public spaces, Occupy protesters across the country are reclaiming foreclosed homes and boarded-up properties, signaling a tactical shift for the movement against wealth inequality.

Groups in more than 25 cities held protests Tuesday on behalf of homeowners facing evictions.

In Atlanta, protesters held a boisterous rally at a county courthouse and used whistles and sirens to disrupt an auction of seized houses. In New York, they marched through a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn carrying signs that read "Foreclose on banks, not people." Southern California protesters rallied around a family of six that reclaimed the home they lost six months ago in foreclosure.

"It's pretty clear that the fight is against the banks, and the Occupy movement is about occupying spaces. So occupying a space that should belong to homeowners but belongs to the banks seems like the logical next step for the Occupy movement," said Jeff Ordower, one of the organizers of Occupy Homes.

The events reflect the protesters' lingering frustration over the housing crisis that has sent millions of homes into foreclosure after the burst of the housing bubble that helped cripple the country's economy. Nearly a quarter of all U.S. homeowners with mortgages are now underwater, representing nearly 11 million homes, according to CoreLogic, a real estate research firm.

Protesters say that banks and financial firms own abandoned foreclosed houses that could be housing people.

Seattle has become a leader in the anti-foreclosure movement as protesters took over a formerly boarded-up duplex last month. They painted the bare wood sidings with green, black and red paint, and strung up a banner that says "Occupy Everything - No Banks No Landlords."

While arrests have already been made in a couple of squatting cases in Seattle and Portland, it remains to be seen how authorities will react to this latest tactic.

In Portland, police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson said he's aware that the movement called for people to occupy foreclosed homes, but said it's difficult to distinguish between the people who would squat in homes as a political statement and those that do it for shelter.

"The vacant property issue is of concern in cities nationwide," Simpson said. "We'll treat them all as trespassers."

In Seattle, protesters took over a boarded-up warehouse slated for demolition last weekend. In an announcement, the protesters said they planned to make the warehouse into a community center, and hosted a party the night they opened the building. Police moved in soon after, arresting 16 people in the process of clearing it out.

Seattle police spokesman Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said his department sees squatting in private properties as the same violation of trespassing Occupy Seattle made when it camped in a downtown park.

"It's no different than when people were trespassing (in the park)," Whitcomb said. "We went nights and days, letting people camp in the park. We relied on education and outreach, rather than enforcing the law to the letter."

Atlanta protesters took a more aggressive approach in trying to disrupt the home auction. The auction went on but the whistles and sirens made it difficult for the auctioneers to communicate, said Occupy Atlanta spokesman Tim Franzen.

"We don't know how many homes we saved for one more month during the holiday season," he said. "It was kind of a Christmas gift to the people."

In Riverside, Calif., Art de los Santos arrived in a U-Haul with assorted furniture and about three dozen supporters at his former three-bedroom, three bathroom home. He broke the lock and moved back in.

Reclaiming his old home is his last resort to get the attention of bank JP Morgan Chase after he applied three times for a loan modification to no avail.

"I'm getting down to my last option," he said. "Nothing seems to work. Maybe if I protest, it'll get their attention."

The home, which was foreclosed on, is sitting empty while he, his wife and four children, aged 11 to 7, are squeezed into an Orange County rental apartment. He's also renting a storage unit.

"It's sad because you have all these memories there," said the 46-year-old. "My kids were running around the neighborhood on their bikes. It's a nice little community."

Tom Kelly, spokesman for JPMorganChase, had no immediate knowledge of de los Santos' case and could not comment, but noted that he is trespassing.

New York protesters introduced members of a homeless family at the end of their rally and said they plan renovate and clean up the house so the family can live in a house they said had been abandoned by a bank.

In Portland, a press conference was held at the home of a woman facing foreclosure next March. She vowed to stay in her house until authorities take her out.

"We belong here," said Deb Austin, who said she fell behind in payments after a cancer diagnosis and after her husband lost her second job. "And we're not leaving."

How to monitor major Twitter twantrums

Twantrum

By Helen A.S. Popkin

Who doesn't?like to take?little time out to enjoy the grumpy goodness of everyday consumers raging against the machine in 140 characters or less?

That's the hey-what-took-so-long idea behind Twantrum, a freshly launched widget that?"monitors brand mentions and different levels of rage towards them ? from Mild to Mel Gibson."

"The Twantrum widget uses real-time Twitter search, powered by anger-related and brand keywords," TheNextWeb?reports. "This technology would be a boon for any brand?s marketing and communications department.?For example with Comcast, whose customers seem ready, willing and able to hate on them, Twantrum is looking for keywords like: comcast, anger, worst. Twantrum then ranks the kinds of profanity used in tweets," using the aformentioned?"mild" to "Mel Gibson" scale.? (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal, a unit of Comcast.)

The mild range are pretty benign ? and hence, dull:

@BestBuy #Fail?customer service experiences w/ ur Call Center. On hold hours, disconnected, and wouldn't help. Wish I had shopped Amazon

?Here's an example from the "restrained" category:

Dear @Vodafone, I sincerely suggest you stay out of my way because if there is one more technical error I'm going to kill you.

This is from the third-to-most enraged group of tweets, "angry"

OMG!! I want to eat something so bad but I am stuck waiting for @Comcast to show up.

Meanwhile, the "Mel Gibson" level isn't defined as the drunken anti-Semetic and/or misogynist?rantings of an entitled movie star, as one might assume, but colorful profanity, indecipherable hashtags and blatant abuse of the CAPS LOCK key. Those look something like this, but without asterisks where the naughty words should be:

Geico says if i got insurance on my truck it would cost $227 a month. F*** THAT!

Speaking of which, Twantrum offers a six-step Twitter Intervention Guide for those who frequently find themselves in Mel Gibson territory, though the most obvious tip, "Walk away from the computer" isn't offered until step three.?No matter. It sounds as if the Twantrum founders are hoping to turn their very basic tool into something bigger.

"For now, we?re enjoying it mainly for the LOLs ? and we?re hoping others will too," Twantrum co-founder James Aviaz told TheNextWeb.?"In the longer term, there?s something to be said about its application in the midst of a major event for brands. For example, it would have been interesting to see the effect when there was the backlash against BP ? you could measure the velocity of the tweets and really see in one place how people were talking about the brand."

No doubt. These days, Twitter is a booming eco-system for major corporations to reach out to their customers, even the angry ones.

Six killed in attack in volatile northeast Nigeria (Reuters)

BAUCHI, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Gunmen killed three people on Sunday, including a policemen and a soldier, when they bombed police buildings and a bank in northeast Nigeria, a region beset by attacks by Islamist sects.

The attackers fired assault rifles and threw explosives in the attack early on Sunday on two police stations in Azare, a town in northeast Bauchi state, where the Islamist sect Boko Haram has been blamed for an assault earlier this year.

"One policeman, one soldier, one civilian and three suspected attackers were killed," Ikechukwu Aduba, Bauchi police commissioner, told Reuters.

Witnesses said a bank was looted and the two police buildings were set ablaze.

Boko Haram, whose name translates at "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language, has been blamed for dozens of attacks in northeastern states this year, most of which are aimed at figures in authority.

The sect carried out a prison raid last year in Bauchi, freeing around 700 inmates.

Boko Haram also claimed responsibility for two bombings in the capital Abuja this year, the latest a suicide attack on United Nations headquarters in August, which killed 24 people.

Google employees now testing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S, claim it's delicious

Damn them. As it turns out, Google employees are the lucky guinea pigs for testing Android 4.0 on the Nexus S, and Mountain View's minions have now begun crowing about their superiority. On the up side, this means that all users of Google's former prodigy are one step closer to receiving the official version of Ice Cream Sandwich onto their devices. The company hopes its employees will discover any lingering foul tastes before delivering its frozen treat onto the unwashed masses, although early reports suggest they're digging the flavors. Of course, if you just can't wait -- and hey, we haven't -- there's always custom ROMs to fill the void.

Cheetah

Status: vulnerable

The Earth's fastest land animal has disappeared from much of its former range. In Africa, cheetahs remain widespread but thinly scattered, but they have they have vanished entirely from many countries in Asia.

The species is particularly tricky to protect because it is divided into at least five subspecies, each of which needs to be preserved. They are also difficult to breed in captivity.

This cheetah was photographed in the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya.

Violent video games alter brain function in young men

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis of long-term effects of violent video game play on the brain has found changes in brain regions associated with cognitive function and emotional control in young adult men after one week of game play.

The results of the study were presented November 30 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

The controversy over whether or not violent video games are potentially harmful to users has raged for many years, making it as far as the Supreme Court in 2010. But there has been little scientific evidence demonstrating that the games have a prolonged negative neurological effect.

"For the first time, we have found that a sample of randomly assigned young adults showed less activation in certain frontal brain regions following a week of playing violent video games at home," said Yang Wang, M.D., assistant research professor in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. "These brain regions are important for controlling emotion and aggressive behavior."

For the study, 22 healthy adult males, age 18 to 29, with low past exposure to violent video games were randomly assigned to two groups of 11. Members of the first group were instructed to play a shooting video game for 10 hours at home for one week and refrain from playing the following week. The second group did not play a violent video game at all during the two-week period.

Each of the 22 men underwent fMRI at the beginning of the study, with follow-up exams at one and two weeks. During fMRI, the participants completed an emotional interference task, pressing buttons according to the color of visually presented words. Words indicating violent actions were interspersed among nonviolent action words. In addition, the participants completed a cognitive inhibition counting task.

The results showed that after one week of violent game play, the video game group members showed less activation in the left inferior frontal lobe during the emotional task and less activation in the anterior cingulate cortex during the counting task, compared to their baseline results and the results of the control group after one week. After the second week without game play, the changes to the executive regions of the brain were diminished.

"These findings indicate that violent video game play has a long-term effect on brain functioning," Dr. Wang said.

Coauthors are Tom Hummer, Ph.D., William Kronenberger, Ph.D., Kristine Mosier, D.M.D., Ph.D., and Vincent P. Mathews, M.D. This research is supported by the Center for Successful Parenting, Indiana.

Abstract: One Week of Violent Video Game Play Alters Prefrontal Activity

Ant Communications - Ant Blog

On my walks I see ants of many sizes. My question is about medium size fast moving ants. As they race about in a line (or roughly a broad line), some going and some coming, some meet head on and stop to either check something or communicate. They stop for a split second or sometimes a second or two. Any idea why?
John McAllister

Dear John:

As always around here, we appreciate your interest in ants. Lacking locality information or more specific description of the ants, it would be impossible to identify the species you observed, but some general principles of ant behavior will certainly apply to your question.
Ants may form relatively heavily traveled trails, with individuals traveling in both directions for a couple of reasons. One is that they have what is called a foraging "trunk" trail, with hungry outbound foragers heading away from the nest to the food gathering areas beyond, and food-bearing returning individuals heading home. Similar trails may be formed among the various nests of ants that live in large, multi-nest (polydomous) colonies, and it is along such trails that the family ties among the different nests are maintained.
You more or less answered your own question about why the ants stop when they meet head-on, with the phrase "either check something or communicate". One thing they check is that the ant they encounter is a member of their own colony, recognized by odor, just as dogs recognize humans and other dogs individually. Ants are strongly territorial and typically don't tolerate members of other colonies intruding on their space. Another thing, they might be checking is if the oncoming ant has any food to offer. Commonly, if a returning forager has found a particularly good source of food, it may communicate to the other ant through physical and chemical (pheromone) signals that it should carry on in the direction it is going to find that food.
