Tips For Making Garden Tools Last a Lifetime | Gardening Tools And ...

By? James P Martin

The best gardeners keep and maintain their gardening tools with great care. One of the least talked about secrets to a fulfilling garden are the tools needed to foster a healthy and beautiful garden. The following are a few tips for keeping your valuable garden tools damage free and working in your garden for many, many years.

Garden Hoses and Hose Reels

The garden hose is one of the most valuable and most used tools in the yard and garden. The serious gardener will own a sturdy and flexible garden hose ? one that can be would up after use on a garden hose reel. To prevent cracking, the garden hose should be drained in the fall, wound on the reel and stored inside during the winter.

Shears, Blades and Cutting Tools

Every gardener needs the proper tools to cut and trim plants, bushes and flowers. Plan on thoroughly cleaning your electric cutting tools at least every season, preferably twice per year. All hand held shears and cutting tools should be well lubricated to prevent rust ? an element that can be the mortal enemy of garden tools. Store garden equipment on hooks away from direct sunlight and the elements. It may not be necessary to store them inside during the winter, but be certain that they stay dry and away from children when not being used.

Hoes, Shovels and Rakes

These types of tools are bulkier and harder to store than simple hand tools or hoses. After each use, spray each tool with a high pressure hose to remove dirt, then dry them and store them upright onto hooks. Most tools made within the last few years are made of a carbon coating or stainless steel and should not rust easily. A light coat of oil in the fall however will keep these metal tools free from rust for many years.

Tool Shed

Many home improvement stores now sell ready-made sheds for storing manual and electric garden tools. It is a good idea to store all of your tools in the same dry place, and these types of sheds fit the bill perfectly. The most important aspect of the shed is simply keeping it organized. There is nothing worse than opening a shed in the spring, only to have tools falling every which way due to lack of organization and proper planning. Instead, organize tools by size and by function. This simple tip will save you alot of frustration. It will also save you time and money since you won?t be replacing broken tools frequently.

A good collection of garden and yard tools can be an expensive proposition. With a little care and forethought, you
should be able to maintain your garden tools for a lifetime of use.

Scientists gain new insight into prefrontal cortex activity

ScienceDaily (Mar. 5, 2012) ? The brain has a remarkable ability to learn new cognitive tasks while maintaining previously acquired knowledge about various functions necessary for everyday life. But exactly how new information is incorporated into brain systems that control cognitive functions has remained a mystery.

A study by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the McGovern Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shows how new information is encoded in neurons of the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain involved in planning, decision making, working memory and learning.

"In this study we were able to isolate activity directly from the brain, allowing us to 'see' what was happening in the prefrontal cortex before and after a new task was learned," said Christos Constantinidis, Ph.D., associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study, published in the March 5 online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

To gain insight into how learning a new task affects the prefrontal cortex, the researchers analyzed the electrical activity of neurons before and after training for the performance in two short-term memory tests. Two monkeys initially looked at a computer screen while various shapes, such as squares and circles, were displayed, and researchers recorded the electrical activity occurring in the brain. The same animals were then trained to recognize the various shapes, and to remember whether two symbols matched each other.

Using computational analysis of the neuronal recordings, the researchers compared data to assess what information was present before training and what new information arose while learning a new task. They found that learning was associated with activation of a small number of neurons that were highly specialized for the new task, while the same neurons maintained the existing information that was present before training.

"In essence, this select group of neurons was able to multitask by learning new information while retaining information they were already specialized for," Constantinidis said. "Our results show that although there was little change in the amount of basic stimulus information that neurons encoded before training, more complex information about whether the symbols matched became incorporated throughout the prefrontal cortex after training."

Overall these findings shed light on how new information is incorporated into the prefrontal cortex activity and how neural activity codes information, which should lead to richer theories of how the prefrontal cortex controls behavior and how information is encoded in neural activity more generally.

"We hope that our findings will help others who work with patients who have short-term memory problems resulting from strokes or traumatic brain injuries," Constantinidis said. "Computerized training to perform cognitive tasks, like those used in our study, has shown promise in cognitive rehabilitation, and for treatment of mental illnesses and conditions, such as schizophrenia and ADHD."

The research at Wake Forest Baptist was supported in part by grants from the National Eye Institute and the Tab Williams Family Endowment.

Co-authors of the study included Ethan Meyers, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Xuelian Qi, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow at Wake Forest Baptist.

Official TED app for Android now available with streaming video and audio

TED

Many people draw inspiration from a lot of different areas in the world. Looking to gather up those inspired thinkers is the TED Talks conferences that have been happening globally since 1984. Whether you're looking to hear Bill Gates talk about energy or Steve Jobs talk about how to live your life before you die or even how Jamie Oliver thinks you should teach every kid about food - there is something for everyone in the content available from TED.

That content has now been all wrapped up in an Android app available now in the Android Market. Sticking to basics with design, TED has rolled out their app all while keeping a pretty straightforward Ice Cream Sandwich layout within. While the app does look basic, it certainly does deliver on the content. You can stream audio and video as well as search for anything you may be interested in with ease or if you're not looking for any talks specifically, you can just check out what's popular and browse through the content that way.

TED is available as a free download, and will work on Android tablets as well as phones. If you're looking for some inspiration, jump on past the break and grab the download. Thanks, Derek!

(AP) ? Al-Qaida militants overran an army base in southern Yemen on Sunday, capturing heavy weapons and turning them on soldiers in intense clashes that left 61 dead, a military official said.

The battle near the town of Zinjibar in the southern province of Abyan killed 36 government troops and 25 of the militants, he said. A medical official confirmed the death toll. Scores were wounded from both sides, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The official said the fighting was taking place west of Abyan's provincial capital of Zinjibar. Militants seized control of the town in May, taking advantage of political turmoil linked to the uprising against then-President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saleh stepped down last month in a U.S.-backed power transfer deal that Washington hoped would allow Yemen's new leaders to move against al-Qaida. But the fighting highlights the difficulties faced by his successor Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in combatting the militant movement and restoring state authority in the lawless south.

The military officials said the militants were able to seize armored vehicles, artillery pieces, assault rifles and rockets from the stores of an army base they attacked. Some of the heavy weapons were later used against the troops, causing most of the casualties.

A Defense Ministry statement confirmed that the clashes had occurred, saying the fighting began when militants detonated "booby trapped vehicles" at an army base in the region of Koud near Zinjibar. The wording of the statement suggested that the base had been occupied by the militants before army forces regrouped and took it back.

It said there were casualties on both sides but gave no figures.

Hadi meanwhile said in televised comments that fighting al-Qaida and restoring security in the impoverished Arab nation were among his top priorities. He spoke during a meeting with leaders of Yemen's political parties.

Saleh during his more than 30 years in power tolerated radical Islamic groups as part of a delicate balancing act that kept at bay threats to his authority in the fractured nation.

There has been a surge in attacks blamed on al-Qaida after Hadi's inauguration.

Sunday's fighting followed the dismissal last week by Hadi's government of the military commander of the southern region, to which Abyan belongs, along with other security officials from the province.

The Importance Of Dealing With Anxiety Problems | 1stoparticleshop

The problems faced due to anxiety are very common. These kind of difficulties are faced by a lot of people. This can actually be attributed to the lifestyle that is followed by people these days. There has thus been found an increase in the number of people who suffer from this problem.

The overall health and fitness of the person is affected due to this anxiety disorder. The behavior and thinking of the affected person also has a bad impact. The required measure thus needs to be taken as soon as possible.

Anxiety disorder is usually of various types. Social anxiety is considered to be one of the types. The people affected by this problem usually feels that everyone around them are talking about them or are staring at them. They thus fear being around people and are very conscious about what they do. Such people tend to stay away from other people and avoid attending social gatherings. Even though such people know that their behavior is irrational they find that they are helpless about it. They should thus try to seek medical help.

One of the other type of anxiety disorder is the panic disorder. Experiencing panic attack at random is usually observed in this condition. Overlooking this kind of problem can bring about some other psychological issues.

It is very crucial to identify the cause that brings about such problems before actually treating them. A doctor will be the best person to do so. The plan of action would then be decided by the doctor based on the initial evaluation that he would perform. Undergoing talk therapy or psychotherapy is one of the options. One can also take relief medication as an alternative. Both the alternatives may at times be recommended.

Getting inadequate sleep is one of the factors that causes this condition. Neurotransmitters are rejuvenated by REM which is a kind of sleep. The mental efficiency is improved by these neurotransmitters. In the middle of the seventh to the eight hour of sleep their production is the highest. Inadequate sleep would thus result in suppressed production of neurotransmitters.

Plenty of options are available to overcome this condition. Being busy all through the day, exercising and staying away from things like nicotine and alcohol are a few of them. There are also various supplements available which help to deal with anxiety.

Phenibut and Taurine are the ingredients usually present in such supplements. Phenibut makes the brain produce a higher level of gamma-aminobutyric by blending into the blood stream. Gamma-aminobutyric has an impact on the mood of a person. It promotes normal brain function when a person is excited.

Anxiety problems are the ones that can be easily cured. There is nothing to worry about anxiety problems if you are facing it. You are not the only person who is experiencing this problem. There are many. You just need to choose the appropriate plan of action.

Apple App Store hits 25 billion downloads

11 hrs.

25 billion and counting: That's the new mark Apple's App Store reached Saturday, and the company let users know with a "thank you" on its home page, shown here.

Just last July, Apple said it hit 15 billion downloads; last January, it was at 10 billion.

The App Store opened for business in July 2008, about a year after the first iPhone was released. It now has more than 500,000 apps for the iPhone and 140,000 specifically for the iPad.

Apple's closest competitor in the app store arena is Google's Android Market, which opened in October 2008, and reached 10 billion app downloads last December.

The Mac App Store, started by Apple in January 2011 for computer software, topped 100 million downloads in December.

The lucky customer who made the 25 billionth download will win a $10,000 App Store gift card from Apple, which has yet to announce the winner.

The most popular app right now, in both the free and paid categories: "Draw Something" by OMGPOP, a social drawing and guessing game that can be played with friends.
