Guest Post ? Jan Welborn-Nichols, From Chubby Childhood to Food ...

Jan Welborn-Nichols

Guest Author, Jan Welborn-Nichols ? Then & Now

Here?s how I remember it. I was in the sixth grade. It was get-weighed-day in health class. No big deal, right? Wrong. It?s a very big deal when you?re overweight and you know it. Like a perfect storm of horrible, the teacher (whose name I?ve blocked from memory) calmly called each student to the front of the class, where she had us get on the scale. That?s bad enough, but then she said our weight out loud. I was about 5? 2? and I weighed 168 pounds. Worse than the usual taunts of ?fatso? or ?blubber belly?, the room was deadly quiet.

That was it, the event that caused me to ?change my life?, at least for a while. I took charge of how much I was eating, cutting my portions in half, and I exercised after lunch and dinner. Hey, I was 11. I didn?t know about letting food digest before doing jumping jacks, sit-ups and leg lifts.

It?s no wonder I was a chubby kid. I loved food from the get-go and I ate plus-size portions of all things fried, with buttered-up potatoes and plenty of dessert. Vegetables made a token appearance at our table, and our salads were the sweet kind: ambrosia, jell-o, and my personal favorite, graham cracker crumbs with whipped cream and chopped dates. Oh, my!

I lost weight that summer and I grew several inches, starting the seventh-grade as a normal-sized kid. But the weight loss didn?t stick. Now, a lifetime later, I understand why I couldn?t win at the losing game. I changed the outside me that long ago summer, but the inside me, my emotional self, didn?t come along on the journey.

When I was a chubby kid there weren?t very many kids like me. Sadly, that?s no longer the case. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 17%, or 12.5 million kids between the ages of 2 and 19, are obese. That?s double the population of my home state of Missouri. Why then, when there is so much nutrition information readily available, unlike when I was growing up in the 1950s and ?60s, is childhood obesity on the rise?

Complex questions give rise to complicated answers: too little physical activity, too many high calorie foods with low nutritional value, too many people with little access to fresh produce. The external issues that contribute to childhood obesity are many, but it was an internal change that allowed me to finally succeed at achieving a healthy weight.

This may sound strange, but the ability to change my lifestyle, and consequently my life, happened only after I accepted myself exactly as I was. It was a small emotional shift with an enormous pay-off. I realized that my life was happening now, this moment, and I had been deferring happiness most of life. When I wanted to change the way I felt, more than the way I looked, the weight gradually came off and stayed off. I learned to feed my whole self, to choose foods that nourished all of me. In short, I became a Food Detective, reading ingredient labels with a passion; ever on the lookout for the hidden presence of sugar, salt and fat.

It?s taken me most of a lifetime to get over being a chubby kid. Now, I want to make a difference in the lives of kids who are in danger of growing up overweight with all that that means, physically and emotionally. I want to introduce imagination to nutrition, showing kids of all ages how to be Food Detectives, learning cool stuff about the stuff they choose to eat.

Facts can be forgotten, but a story lasts a lifetime. And though I don?t have a super power like the characters in my book, I do have the power to be my best, healthiest and happiest self by making smart food choices. And that?s a power I want everyone to have.

book- Jan Welborn-Nichols is the author of Henrietta Sharp and the Magic Lunch Box, the first in a series of adventure novels for children ages 9 ? 12, and their significant adults.

In addition to her role as a content strategist for business clients, Jan produces content for HenriettaSharp.com, using characters from Henrietta Sharp and the Magic Lunch Box to introduce imagination to nutrition.

The book is available now on all e-book platforms, with print and audio versions coming in November 2012.

Nourishing The New Mama~ Healing foods & Herbs | The Happy ...

?Drink tea and nourish life; with the first sip; joy; with the second sip, satisfaction; with the third sip, peace.?

I have discovered over the past few years that one of the most important things I can do for myself as a mother and woman is to focus on what I take into my body: the thoughts, the food and drinks. In my book, Moon Time, I write about creating a tea ceremony as a way of nourishing yourself with liquid, herbs, warmth and reflective time.

Never is this more important than when you are a new mama. New mamas need all the love and support they can get.

This guest post from Jen of Love and Tea really resonates with me. Jen is based in beautiful Vermont, which is where my American family are based, so I felt a natural affinity with her. She is an artist and trained herbalist who creates the most beautiful herbal teas which nourish every level of a woman?s body and soul. From the names, through the packaging and blends, they are made with a mother?s love and a woman?s wisdom. (Be sure to read to the end for a discount for Happy Womb readers!)

Becoming a new mama takes a tremendous amount of energy. After birth it is especially critical to receive proper rest and nutrition. It is crucial that you focus on?

* A balance of meals; Three full meal & nutrient rich snacks throughout the day are key to proper nourishment and keeping up the supply of breast milk. When a meal is skipped our bodies automatically produce an abundance of stress hormones. Stress hormones inhibit milk production and can lead to reflux in the infant.

*Nourishing grains include: Barley, Oatmeal, Corn Meal, Buckwheat, Brown Rice, Quiona and Amaranth.

* In Ayurvedic post-partum care, it is stressed to avoid cold/raw foods during the post-partum stage. This helps reduce gas, bloating for both mama & baby.

* Proper fats. Yes FATS!!! Healthy fats play a crucial role in the body. They are used as building blocks to create cell walls, nerves, tissues and hormonal balance. They can also stabilize blood sugars ? which help protect against mood swings. EFA?S or (essential Fatty Acids) play an essential role in brain & body functions. What we eat, literally affects how we think and feel!

*Sources of healthy fats include: Organic Coconut oil, cold pressed & traditional veggie oils. Also avocados, sesame seeds, raw nuts and oily fish (avoid deep water fish such as tuna due to heavy metal toxicity).?

* Eating organic & chemical free foods not only supports your entire body, but your baby?s health too.

* Water and proper hydration: Getting enough water into your body helps heal and rejuvenate at the cellular levels. Herbals teas are another way great way to keep properly hydrated. Ayurveda recommends avoiding iced drinks.

There are a vast array of herbs to nourish, re-store and re-vitalize mamas after giving birth.

*Nettles: High in Vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting, Nettles is especially useful with post-partum bleeding. Used traditionally to increase and enrich breast milk.? The minerals and vitamins found within Nettles provides an excellent support in restoring and rebuilding the energy levels following birth.

*Dandelion: This little yellow flower is packed full of essential minerals and vitamins. Dandelion is very beneficial for new mamas!? Dandelion is high in Vitamin A, Calcium and rich in Iron. Dandelion also aids in exhaustion and fatigue.

*Lemon Balm: Relaxes and calms the nervous system.? Lemon Balm has been used traditionally for depression and insomnia. Lemon Balms add its hint of lemon aroma and flavor to uplift and refresh the new mama.? Lemon Balm is said to help one cope with new life situations, IE: Motherhood!!!

* Lady?s Mantle: Revered as an herb for the entire female system, Lady?s Mantle has an affinity to regulate and decrease post-partum bleeding.

* Jasmine Flowers: Have an affinity for the entire female system. Energetically these flowers increase compassion and love. Jasmine flowers are said to make the mind receptive, aid and receive while radiating vibrations of mantras.

?Lactation is the nutritional equivalent to running 10 miles a day!?

My Ayurvedic post-partum teachers would remind us this statement each class and I have never forgotten it! For those of you breastfeeding, here are some foods and herbs known to support and increase lactation:

* Roasted Cumin seeds

* Dill seeds

* Anise seeds

* Caraway seeds

* Coriander Seeds

* Red Beets

Foods to be aware of (Limit consumption)

These Anti-Lactogenic foods- these foods have been know to decrease the mother?s? milk supply and can cause reflux and other issues in the infant:

* Soft drinks & carbonated beverages; these not only decrease milk supply but rob your body of calcium.

* Coffee & Caffeinated beverages

* Chocolate

* Citric Acids in foods & juices (tomato, citrus fruits etc)

* Aspartame? (should be avoided in any case as it is highly toxic)

Potentially Anti-Lactogenic herbs:

(These herbs can potentially decrease and dry breast milk)

* Parsley

* Sage

* Rosemary

* Thyme

* Mint

From Bill Gates, a toilet challenge spills forth

SEATTLE (AP) ? These aren't your typical loos. One uses microwave energy to transform human waste into electricity. Another captures urine and uses it for flushing. And still another turns excrement into charcoal.

They are part of a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation competition to reinvent the toilet for the 2.5 billion people around the world who don't have access to modern sanitation.

Scientists from around the world have taken up the challenge, and the foundation announced some projects Tuesday that will be getting more money to take their ideas from the lab to cities.

There, local entrepreneurs will use the new technology to turn pollution into cash.

"We couldn't be happier with the response that we've gotten," Bill Gates said.

To pass the foundation's threshold for the world's next toilet, it must operate without running water, electricity or a septic system, not discharge pollutants, preferably capture energy or other resources, and operate at a cost of 5 cents a day.

The United Nations estimates disease caused by unsafe sanitation results in about half the hospitalizations in the developing world. About 1.5 million children die each year from diarrheal disease.

Scientists believe most of these deaths could be prevented with proper sanitation, along with safe drinking water and improved hygiene.

The foundation expects to field test its first prototypes within the next three years.

Most of the prototypes on display this week in the open courtyard of the foundation's Seattle headquarters turn solid waste into energy. This is both a practical and pragmatic solution to the solid waste puzzle, said Carl Hensman, program officer for the foundation's water, sanitation and hygiene team.

Many recycle waste into other usable substances such as animal feed, water for irrigation, or even just energy and water to run their own systems.

Some, like the winning project from Caltech, use chemistry and engineering to completely transform the waste.

Clement Cid, a Caltech grad student from Trouillas, France, said it has been intellectually rewarding to work with scientists from a variety of specialties.

"You can come up with great ideas," he said, adding that the toilet fair offered more opportunities for idea sharing.

Other projects on display were not so high-tech, including one from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine that sends black soldier fly larvae inside latrines and even home toilets to process waste, resulting in high quality, environmentally friendly animal feed at a cost of a penny a day.

The fly larvae project is already being field tested in Cape Town, South Africa, and the inventors are working on a kit to sell to entrepreneurs. They have had inquiries from Haiti, Sudan, Kenya and Ghana about adopting the approach.

"At the end of the day it will look very low-tech, but there's a lot of science behind it," said Walter Gibson, a medical biochemist who is part of the development team.

The Gates toilet focus started just about a year ago, and including grants announced Tuesday, $370 million in foundation dollars have been committed to reinventing the toilet. Hensman said the foundation decided to hold a toilet fair this week to show how far the scientists have gotten in that time, and to give them an opportunity to learn from each other and potentially collaborate.

Among those scheduled to attend the toilet fair were government ministers from African nations, utility workers and potential financial partners like UNICEF and Oxfam.

Reinventing the toilet has the potential to improve lives as well as the environment.

Flush toilets waste tons of potable drinking water each year, fail to recapture reusable resources like the potential energy in solid waste and are simply impractical in so many places.

Gates predicted the result of this project would reach beyond the developing world.

"If we do it right, there's every possibility that some of these designs would also be solutions for rich and middle-income countries," Gates said.

Chinese serial killer shot dead after massive manhunt

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese police in the southwestern city of Chongqing shot dead a fugitive serial killer and armed robber on Tuesday after a massive manhunt aimed at reassuring people the government would continue a crime crackdown begun by sacked party boss Bo Xilai.

Zhou Kehua, 42, who was responsible for nine deaths across several provinces, was finally cornered and shot dead at a Chongqing shoe factory around dawn, the official Xinhua news agency said, in a case which has gripped the country.

Keen to put on a show of strength after the sacking earlier this year of Chongqing's controversial Communist Party head Bo, who led a high-profile crimebusting campaign, authorities mobilized thousands of police to catch the killer.

Zhou had been implicated in robberies and killings in three provinces dating back to 2004, and resurfaced last week to shoot dead a woman outside a Chongqing bank, Xinhua said.

Authorities described Zhou, who targeted people withdrawing money from banks, as "ruthless and extremely dangerous".

"Police ... confirmed that the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau was praised and honored by China's Minister of Public Security Meng Jianzhu immediately after the operation," Xinhua added.

Chinese news portals showed a lurid picture provided by the police of Zhou sprawled on the ground with blood streaming from his head.

Gun crime is rare in China as a result of tight controls over firearms.

The hunt for Zhou has been the most popular topic on China's Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo for the past few days, and has dominated the news.

How Paul Ryan will help Mitt Romney change the conversation

Reuters/Darren Hauck

From the moment Mitt Romney endorsed and embraced the House Republican budget, authored by his newly announced running mate Paul Ryan, Democrats pounced, ensuring it would be known forevermore as the "Romney-Ryan" budget.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee clearly doesn't seem to mind.

As with all of the big moments in a presidential campaign, context matters most. In selecting Paul Ryan, the intellectual force of the modern conservative and Republican movement, after a very rough summer spent on the receiving end of an Obama campaign onslaught of framing and advertising, Romney is not simply picking a safe choice of a governing partner and a fellow campaigner to help amplify his message. He is, instead, looking to change the conversation.

Romney has spent much of the last two months playing defense against attacks on his days at Bain Capital, his refusal to release his tax returns, the foreign locations where he houses some of his wealth, and his job creation record in Massachusetts. He also garnered less than stellar news coverage of his trip overseas and continues to struggle to find a way to break out of the 'out of touch millionaire who doesn't understand the problems of the average American' narrative frame Team Obama has built.

By putting Ryan and his deficit cutting plans, largely aimed at significantly altering some very popular entitlement programs such as Medicare, front and center, Romney seems to be demanding a new phase of the 2012 debate. ?It is an effort to turn the page from stories about car elevators, the Cayman Islands, and dancing horses and welcome a sharp ideological contrast with President Obama about America's fiscal future and the governing philosophies behind it.

Romney's senior advisers have argued for months that they needed to do little more than talk about the economy and unemployment each day in order to beat the president in November. The selection of? Ryan as running mate makes it far more likely that Medicare, Social Security, and dramatic spending cuts will be as central to the campaign conversation this fall as jobs and the economy. Adding some of those famed political third rails into the mix is not just a potential risk Romney is willing to take, it is also clearly a potential risk he felt he had to take.

Of course, Romney won't portray it as much of a risk at all. He had already embraced Ryan's budget and is well aware that Democrats are poised to use it as a political weapon irrespective of his vice presidential pick.

But after watching the rise of the Tea Party, the hardened opposition to President Obama's health care law, the gubernatorial elections of Bob McDonnell in Virginia and Chris Christie in New Jersey, and the shellacking of their party in the 2010 midterms, Democrats believe they found some political gold in the Ryan budget. In May 2011, Democrat Kathy Hochul was elected to Congress from upstate New York in a special election in which she largely ran against the Medicare reforms in the Ryan budget. It was a brief moment of electoral success in the Obama Era for Democrats and one they hope to extrapolate to elections across the country this fall in the face of an undesirable economic environment. Ryan's position in a glaring national spotlight, they hope, will aid their efforts from the presidential race and down the ballot.

The Ryan pick also comes after a week of a growing chorus of influential conservative voices calling on Romney to choose him.

"The case for Mr. Ryan is that he best exemplifies the nature and stakes of this election. More than any other politician, the House Budget Chairman has defined those stakes well as a generational choice about the role of government and whether America will once again become a growth economy or sink into interest-group dominated decline," wrote the Wall Street Journal editorial board on Thursday.

Romney has never met with full approval or trust from the conservative wing of his party. ?The opposition to Obama, far more than a passionate love for Romney, has been fueling the GOP consolidation around its candidate since he effectively captured the nomination back in April. His pick of Paul Ryan can possibly go a long way in giving his base voters something to vote for rather than just a vote against the president. That could be a powerful motivator in turning folks out to the polls in November.

There will certainly be more car elevator-esque stories and other cable catnip to come this cycle. But, for now, we will likely see entitlement programs, spending cuts, and deficits take on a prominent part of the campaign chatter. So, brush up on your working knowledge of premium support. ?The conversation has changed (for at least a little while).
