No-kill animal shelter celebrates 45 years

On Saturday, Pets Fur People filled with East Texans who wanted to add a member to their family and show their support for the 45th anniversary of this no-kill animal shelter.

Previously known as the Humane Society of East Texas, the executive director of this shelter said with the new name comes a new message. ?

"We want for people to understand that we really are a ministry, we are helping people through pets and that's what this is all about. It truly is a ministry," said Executive Director, Gayle Helms.?

Pets Fur People had an open house on Saturday to celebrate the anniversary and the new name. Last year, the shelter adopted out around 800 animals to families. Right now, Helms said they have about 60 dogs and two cats who need a forever home. She said that number is always changing as they take in animals people can no longer care for.

If you are looking to adopt a pet, Helms said the shelter will be open on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.?
