Voice over Internet Protocol (voip), also commonly referred to as Internet Protocol telephony (IP telephony), is a form of telephone communication via the internet. Many businesses these days are using voip wireless communications as a cost-saving alternative to the original copper wire telephone lines, or land line, telephone system.
With voip you can use special voip handsets which look very much like regular telephones, but they are currently still quite expensive and not absolutely necessary for access to IP telephony systems. Personal computers can be fitted with an application software called softphone, which basically converts them into phones, with the numbered keypad displayed on the monitor, dialed by mouse clicks. Some mobile, or cell, phones which have access to the internet and certain other protocol features, can also be used to transmit voice and data communications. Wireless Fidelity, or WiFi, technology allows computers to be connected through local area networks, or LANs, which means that internet connections through cables are not necessary.
Similar to but perhaps more useful than the traditional telephone, IP telephony systems allow verbal communication between parties, such as a simple phone conversation, as well as transmission of documents, faxes, excel files, and videos. While mobiles/cells are conducive to conversations, too, using them to access the internet can be costly depending on the terms of the service plan. And not all cell phones are equipped with the necessary protocol technology to function as IP telephony devices.
If you do have a properly equipped cell phone, it will still be necessary to purchase a data plan from your cell phone service provider if you intend to use it as a mobile IP telephony service device. Prices of unlimited data plans will vary by cell provider. And in addition it will still be necessary to pay for the voip service as well.
In countries around the world, it is possible to locate IP telephony service providers. Basic features include caller ID, voicemail, fax, three-way calling, call blocking, call waiting, call forwarding, caller ID with name, last number re-dial, information directory, local number portability, and 911 service. Advanced features are also available and they include enhanced 911, or E911, service, anonymous call block, and change phone number.
As the technology evolves and the use of voip wireless services becomes more popular, it is likely that the demand will increase and new uses and features will be created. The ability for people to speak to each other through the internet, using only their laptops with microphones and cameras, at no cost is becoming much more common as people spread the word about its availability.
Perhaps in the near future, it will be possible to communicate in this way, at little or no cost in a more mobile way. Hand held devices which won?t require cell phone service plans, instead of personal computers or laptops, may become available.
Some of the commonly used protocols used to facilitate IP telephony systems are H. 323, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), and Session Description Protocol (SDP). Though currently not commonly known or understood technologies, as voip wireless communications increase in popularity and availability, these protocols may very well become part of people?s every day vocabulary.
