Most Advanced Classic Cars of Their Decades (Part 2) | Old Classic ...

Posted by Steve White on Mar 09, 2012

In our previous post, we discussed the most advanced classic cars for?the decades 1910s?to 1940s. Today, we will talk about innovative cars from the 1950s to 1980s.

1950s: Citroen DS

The Citroen DS is regarded as one of the most technically ambitious and over-engineered vehicles that were ever mass-produced. While automakers in Detroit were busily experimenting with chrome and tailfins, the French focused on redefining automotive luxury. The DS set new standards for handling, braking, and overall ride quality.

1960s: NSU Ro80

The NSU Ro80 may be somewhat oddly-proportioned, but it featured many automotive concepts that were considered advanced in the late 1960s. It had a front-wheel-drive through semiautomatic gearbox, Wankel engine, four-wheel disc brakes, long wheelbase and lots of interior room, and good air-drag figures.

1970s: Saab 99 Turbo

Unlike most automakers in the Malaise Era, Saab managed to produce cars that were faster, better, and more exciting. The 99 Turbo featured a fuel-injected four-cylinder engine with an advanced turbo system, as well as high levels of comfort, safety, and practicality.

1980s: Porsche 959

When the Porsche 959 prototype was introduced at the 1983 Frankfurt Auto Show, it seemed so advanced that nobody took it seriously. The production version was equipped with torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive, composite body panels, and an engine from a 962. About 25 years later, other automakers were only beginning to match it.
